Blurb: The werecat virus has altered society, and for Roan McKichan, a born infected ex-cop turned private investigator, life is a capricious landscape.
With all the unknowns of his mutating virus, Roan has relocated to Canada, and he should be enjoying early retirement, but his restlessness makes it impossible to walk away from being a detective. Taking on the case of a missing teenager gives Roan the chance to use his heightened senses to see through the deceptions—and reunites him with a few old friends.
As Roan and Dylan adjust to their new reality, everything shifts again… when Roan discovers he might not be alone in his exceptional abilities.
Review: It was ten years ago this month that I fell head over heels for a private investigator who prowled the mean streets of Seattle, and happened to be the only known virus child in the world of the Infected. Roan McKichan has gone through some things over those ten years, including a move from the urban jungle of Seattle for a quieter life with his husband Dylan in Vancouver. Extenuating circumstances, as they often do, influenced their move when Roan was forced to retire. But the gang is back, and gods, it’s so freaking fantastic to see them again.
After taking a stab at retirement doesn’t work out for him, Roan takes on the case of a young man who’d disappeared without a trace eight months ago. Every lead the police followed led to nothing, and they’ve as much as given up on the case as unsolvable. They don’t have Roan’s innate skill set, though, and he uses every one of those talents to work to solve this mystery. The ways in which Roan has evolved over the past decade remains the stuff of fantasy and legend, which continues to deepen his lore—albeit to his detriment—while pushing him closer to some sort of reckoning.
Infected: Legacy reads a lot like the times have come to meet Roan, and Roan has risen up to meet the times. Current chaos in the real world converges to become the backdrop Roan was, perhaps ironically, made for and to narrate. As always, his opinions and observations are barbed with the sum of his life experiences, and while he wades through a glut of medical and emotional land mines, one thing remains constant—the love of his husband and chosen family, which, in an unexpected turn of events, grows by one in this installment of the series.
One of the strengths of the Infected world has always been the characters themselves, but none of this would succeed without Speed’s engaging, sharp, irreverent, and clever narration. These characters read like old friends, the hockey guys are next level fantastic, and it’s a testament to their prodigious charms that they all endure in this iconic Urban Fantasy -verse, so I’ll fully admit, without hesitation or embarrassment, that I read this book with a great deal of sentiment urging me along through its pages.
I’ve rarely been so geeked for the release of a book, but after such a long drought without these characters, this book feels like nothing less than a gift to fans of this series.
