Blurb: Isaac had lost Michael once. He wouldn’t survive a second time…
Michael
Five years ago, he became the alpha of the most influential London pack. Responsible for monitoring and suppressing the human resistance, also known as the Candidate Evacuation Group.
A group he’d secretly founded.
Now exposed and on the run, labelled a traitor by his peers, he finds refuge in the home of the man he left behind. The only man he’s ever loved.
For Michael, that love burns as bright as it always has, but they’ve been apart a long time. He can’t expect Isaac to still feel the same.
But he can hope.
Isaac
When Michael left for London after the war, he took Isaac’s heart with him, promising to return when the time was right. But that took longer than either of them expected.
Now he’s back, with the whole of the Shifter Alliance Party out for his blood. But being together is hard. Long-buried feelings bubble to the surface, and rekindling an old romance is low on the list of priorities—they have a rebellion to fight.
Isaac will protect Michael with his life.
Always.
But trusting him with his heart again isn’t nearly as easy.
Review: Michael McKillan, alpha of the McKillan pack, was among the shifters who had worked to establish a co-equal governing body with humans, despite the fact that humans had dominated and suppressed the wolves, subjugated them and treated them as less-than, for years. Forming the Shifter Alliance Party with like-minded wolves and humans who wanted to coexist peacefully and equally was the goal. Until, that is, a faction of wolves defied the terms of the alliance and established authoritarian rule over humans; an eye for an eye was all the motivation they required. Now humans are forced to join a pack, many are forced to “take the bite”, and Michael had little choice but to go along with it. But there is a rebellion on the horizon, one he orchestrated. There are humans and shifters who still wish to reconcile and live in cooperation with on another. The question is, will they live long enough to see it come to fruition?
Uprising is the third book in Annabelle Jacobs’ Rebellion series. It picks up at/slightly overlaps with the end of Defiance, when Michael, with no little help and no small amount of threat to life and limb, leads a group of fellow refugees from London to seek shelter at the home of Isaac Mothecombe, alpha of the Mothecombe pack and the love of Michael’s life. These two strong alphas have never stopped yearning for each other, even if they had given up on the prospect of spending the rest of their lives together as mates. Jacobs captures the longing, the pining, the lust, the resignation, and the hope, and translates it all into a beautiful love story while still maintaining the reality of the precarious situation these characters are in.
When the inevitable happens, the danger and tension escalate, and, as was the case in the previous books, there are also some fantastic twists I didn’t see coming which worked to move the story forward in a way that didn’t deescalate the suspense in the slightest but pushed it to its inevitable critical confrontation. The outcome impacts Michael and Isaac’s relationship as well, and one event in particular left much more of an impression than I’d anticipated it would, so kudos to the author for that surprise.
Isaac’s resolve to take things slowly to allow him and Michael to get to know each other again, after five years apart, is challenged by their and their wolves’ unwavering, all-encompassing desire for each other. Grabbing hold of love and happiness when it’s there for the taking, and despite what the future may hold, plays into the decision-making, as does the burden of Michael’s deep-seated guilt and his belief he must atone for his actions when he was the McKillan pack alpha. Each moment, each scene, each romantic beat plays wonderfully off the next. The bonds and loyalty of friendship and pack family add a lovely warmth to the story, beyond Michael and Isaac’s relationship rebuilding. Each of these aspects combine to complement the whole, and unless I’m wrong, this is not the end but the beginning of something new.
