At a Glance: The gripping moment when Evan and Lee’s bond is stricken delivers on the tension shaped by betrayal and the emotion driven by anguish. I am, as always, anxious to see what Cari Z has in store for this world next.

Blurb: Refugees have been streaming into the city of Forge from around the country. Monsters are coming down from the mountains and staking out new hunting grounds. Even as the dragons of Forge grow stronger and more numerous, the challenges they and their riders are facing are only increasing, and there’s only one place to look for answers.
Chicago is the strongest remaining city in the Midwest, home to thousands of people and protected by powerful dragons … or at least, it was. By the time Evan Luck and his dragon, Ladon, arrive there, it’s clear that something’s gone terribly wrong. People are starving, dragons are dying, and nobody knows who’s behind it all.
It’s something they’ve never faced before—something they thought didn’t exist, yet that’s terrifyingly familiar. It’s up to Evan and Ladon to stop it … or lose their city, their son, and their lives.
Review: Cari Z’s version of Chicago is a hotbed of danger and deception, and the target of every version of monster known to this new world. Duplicity and the hunger for control are nearly the death of Evan Luck, not to mention all the souls who calls the city home, when the dragon Ladon comes close to destroying every building and living creature in his path. Not out of malice but of grief.
Reckless continues the Luckless series, expanding the story from the stronghold of Forge—formerly Denver, Colorado, where Evan and Lee live with their son, Jason—to the besieged city of Chicago, when Evan and Lee (who is the dragon Ladon) travel there to investigate the escalation in attacks by creatures that are coming through the rift in numbers that shouldn’t be possible. The men are shocked to discover the number of dragons protecting the city has dwindled drastically as well, among that number a rogue dragon who is bonded with someone from Lee’s past, the same person who’d wanted to bond with Ladon before, and upon, Lee’s wife’s death. And that person still does.
This book is exemplary, in the most romantic way, of how keen Evan and Lee’s bond is, how unique, and what that bond means not only between dragon and rider but to two men who love each other and share a life and a son. The gripping moment when that bond is stricken delivers on the tension shaped by betrayal and the emotion driven by anguish. I am, as always, anxious to see what Cari Z has in store for this world next.
