Blurb: A missing daughter. A faceless enemy. More questions than answers.
Syren and Kane Rua-Ashby have been here before. Now, like then, they’ll use every means at their disposal to bring their daughter back home. But not before uncomfortable truths are exposed, secrets are uncovered, and they’re forced into a reckoning that could change the dynamics of their family.
Review: For readers who’ve been following the Brooklyn Sinner series over the course of the past decade, The Final Sin is going to feel a little sentimental, knowing this will be the last time Avril Ashton visits this particular world of hard men who are unapologetically, comfortably soft for those they love, and who will use every deadly resource at their disposal to protect them. Ashton delivers cameos from the men in the Brooklyn Sinners series as well as from the Run This Town and the Loose Ends series, everyone coming together to support Syren and Kane in the search for Càtia, their teenage daughter, whose sudden and inexplicable disappearance throws Syren back into the world that had once known him only as the deadly Faro.
Syren Rua-Ashby has always been the most compelling character among the men who now make up his family, at least in my opinion. His backstory involves the stuff of nightmares, and pain and trauma are the compass he followed to exact his revenge on the man who’d made his childhood a living hell. Meeting Kane Ashby, a man on the opposite side of the law, years after Syren escaped his torturer, was epiphanous. Syren fell in love and, through no small amount of conflict, gave himself permission to be loved. Now, he and Kane and their three children are living life as safely as Syren’s past will accommodate. Which is to say that even with a retinue of bodyguards, their safety isn’t guaranteed.
The race to find and punish Càtia’s captor takes readers through our emotional paces. Syren’s fear ushers in the sort of focus that means death for anyone who stands between him and his daughter. The unexpected twist to the story was both a nice tug at the heartstrings and a clarification of how everyday concerns will touch even the most extraordinary version of the normal that Syren and Kane live.
This farewell to the family brought with it some harsh truths and even harsher lessons for Càtia to learn as the daughter of a man with a past most could never conceive of let alone survive. The Final Sin is quite the send-off, just as I’d expect from Avril Ashton.
