Blurb: Husband-hunting can be fatal…
As a favour to their friend Sasha, Daniel and Mal are looking for the husband she fled so she can get a divorce and marry again. Instead of a husband, they find a mystery that could see Daniel charged with murder.
It turns out the husband wasn’t who he said he was, and anyway he’s dead. So who is living in the former marital home, and why is Daniel attacked after they visit? Then one of the people they’ve talked to is murdered, and the body is dumped on Daniel’s doorstep. Daniel is in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the local police have him in the frame for the killing.
Sasha’s husband was keeping secrets, and someone wants those secrets buried deeper than a nuclear bunker. If Daniel and Mal insist on digging up the past, they risk being buried too.
Review: Daniel Owen and Mal Kent have been through their fair share of trials, both on the professional and the personal front, over the course of this wonderful series. Their challenges are not over yet, either, as they find themselves at the threshold of another new chapter in their life together, though they’ve not crossed it just yet. To do so means finding, and surviving, a killer in A Lesson Learned.
Ripley Hayes delivers a multi-layered story in this installment of the Daniel Owen Mysteries series that involves not only things Daniel and Mal are facing personally but brings friends, family, and coworkers—former and current—into the mix of the suspense and danger. There’s very much a ripped-from-current-events angle to the investigation Daniel and Mal are undertaking, which should have been much simpler than what they came up against, on what was also supposed to be a quiet getaway for them. Never mix business with pleasure, as the saying goes.
Sasha Powell’s marriage was over long before she left her charming, wealthy, and controlling husband and disappeared with their unborn child. This story treads sympathetically into how Sasha was drawn to Piers Smith, why she left him, how she started over and now needs to be able to move on with her life. Finding Piers and asking him to sign divorce papers so she can remarry is the favor Daniel and Mal are doing for her. Discovering that Piers has been dead for years and that he, in fact, wasn’t even Piers Smith, leads to a labyrinthine set of clues in the mystery, not to mention uncovers a dangerous adversary. Keeping Daniel from being arrested for murder throws a twist into things that brings out Mal’s fiercely loyal and protective side.
If you’ve yet to give these books a seeing-to, they’re more than worth bumping up on your reading list, especially if you enjoy a good whodunnit.
