Blurb: Anton Seiber is on the cusp of finishing his Doctorate of Thaumaturgy, ready to leave university life behind and set out to make his own way in the world. His careful plans are interrupted by the arrival of Camille Lumière, the emperor’s investigator—and Anton’s lover.
Camille is in pursuit of a murderer, and needs Anton’s special talents to help track him down. Worse yet, the killer is targeting foreigners with magical abilities—men like Anton himself. If he and Camille don’t find him before he finds Anton, his every plan for the future could be in jeopardy…not to mention his life.
Review: “Whoever the murderer is, they don’t care about leaving a trail of bodies to get what they want.”
More death and the hunt for another killer bring Camille Lumière and Anton Sieber together again in The Tower, the second book in the Spell Saga series. After surviving a most inauspicious train ride that ultimately delivered Anton to the university in Zürich, he is safely absorbed in his studies—or so he thought—when Camille unexpectedly arrives to enlist Anton’s special talent in thaumaturgy in the hopes of revealing the identity of a murderer before that person can strike again. As it turns out, however, the murder victims share a commonality: they are all English . . . and Anton himself could be next on the list.
In a school full of wonderworkers, the potential that the danger is coming from inside the house, as it were, can’t be overlooked. The setting has changed in The Tower, but the suspense and threats to life and limb are no less absolute or intense. It’s the reason for the peril and the murderous pursuits that will carry forward through the series, and I’m not only here for it but I’m ready to see more of this -verse and its characters. Anton and Camille work well together. But Camille’s motivations, while unclear now, could cause issues between them in the books ahead. More magic, more curiosities, and surely much more risks await these two men.
