Blurb: Dylan’s Cornish retreat wasn’t supposed to include a hot bloke and a cupid-playing ghost…
After tearing his Achilles tendon, recuperating by the sea sounds like a fantastic idea, and Dylan happily accepts his best mate’s offer to stay with him and his uncle for a few weeks. But he hadn’t counted on the uncle being smoking hot, or the fierce attraction that blossoms between them.
Swapping the busy streets of London for the easy pace of Cornish life is exactly what Gareth needs to move on with his own life. His new home requires a little TLC, but he’d expected that. What he hadn’t expected was the ghostly resident already living there.
A ten-year age gap isn’t the only issue standing between Dylan and Gareth. Their time together has an expiration date. By Christmas, Dylan will be back home in Bristol spending the holidays with his dad, leaving Gareth all alone. Luckily for them, a matchmaking Christmas Spirit has other ideas.
Review: Meet-cutes aren’t supposed to be quite this painful . . . in the literal sense. Dylan didn’t mean to blow out his Achilles tendon right before the holidays, nor did he intend to let the beautiful stranger who gave him a helping hand get away without so much as an exchange of phone numbers, but alas, a heaping helping of coincidence intercedes to make this a Christmas to remember.
Annabelle Jacobs delivers the spirit of the season in a deliberate and delightful way, when an unfortunate injury leads to a ghost making her intentions quite clear. Dylan’s best friend Josh invites him to convalesce at his uncle’s new home in Porthmerrack, which Josh is helping to renovate. After all, a change of scenery and the bracing sea air couldn’t hurt since Dylan will be working from home for a while, anyway. That Josh’s uncle turns out to be Dylan’s hot guy from the coffee shop (yikes!) ups the awkward factor in all the expected ways. But Gareth is only ten years older than his nephew, after all. That, however, does not in any way mean Josh wants to think about his uncle and best friend having the hots for each other.
Christmas Spirit is steeped in smalltown charm and the loveliest of neighbors and the warmest of feelings. The delightful Kitty is especially important to the story not only as Gareth’s next door neighbor but also as the curator of information about Agatha, the former—and if we’re being honest, the current—resident of Gareth’s house. Agatha’s own love story plays an important part of the heart and magic of the plot, especially for Dylan and Gareth as Christmas draws near and it becomes more uncertain that they will be able to make a relationship work despite how much they both want it.
There is neither a single Bah nor a Humbug in Christmas Spirit. It’s meant, solely and purposefully, to warm the cockles of your heart and bring a little joy to your reading.
