Review: For me, the mark of a great short story is when the author leaves me wanting more, not because the plot is lacking but because its characters are so tempting. Taylor V. Donovan pulls this off with a man who, as a teenager, was diagnosed as schizophrenic. What he truly is, however, is the best part of his story. How things will resolve is yet to be revealed.
Arlo’s story spans centuries and defies reality, while building empathy for his plight and suspense in where the voices he hears and the visions he sees will lead him. Not to mention leaving readers questioning where he’s been and how he’s been there. Is he being led into temptation or salvation? The twists in Arlo’s life are as mysterious as they are revealing.
23 Riverside Drive is Donovan’s contribution to the Twist in the Tale Event, a collection of free short stories by various authors, which will be live on RJ Scott’s blog until November 3rd. Check them out and grab a few, or all of them.
