Let Yourself Get Swept Away By A “Black Hurricane”

This is the third book in the Boston Boys series. It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading the first two books, A Life Without You and Absolutely Eric.

This story shows how the past can shape how you live your life in the future. Jazz was hurt so badly by his high school crush that he only has non-committed relationships and numerous one night stands, all because he wants to protect his heart. What would a person do if they came face to face with the one true love who broke their heart to pieces? That’s exactly what happens to Jazz when Dean, his former lover and now lead singer of the band Black Hurricane, come to town for their last concert date.

The story is told through Jazz’s point of view so, when we first meet Dean and find out he’s the one who broke Jazz’s heart all those years ago, I didn’t really like him. He came across as being very full of himself, especially when he hasn’t figured out who Jazz is yet and puts the moves on him. It seemed to me he was that stereotypical spoiled rock star who got whatever he wanted. My heart really went out to Jazz, when he realized Dean didn’t remember him. It was like having his heart stomped on again. He is a very likable character, down to earth, hard working, a great friend. I really wanted him to have happiness in his life that I felt he deserved.

Dean does have a chance to redeem himself as a likable character when we find out what really happened to him and why he treated Jazz so bad back in high school. Sometimes I wanted to smack Jazz in the head for not listening to Dean and letting him explain things. There was a whole lot of misunderstanding and stubbornness, but you really felt these two belonged together. Instead of the story being cliched or being drawn out, I thought the author did a great job in showing the walls Jazz had built up around him, being chipped away slowly. I loved the angst, it was needed, these walls weren’t coming down quickly. After many years they still loved each other fiercely and it was great to go on the journey with them rediscovering each other.

Overall, this was a very sweet story. It was all about second chances and forgiveness. I think the author did a great job making Jazz and Dean work for their relationship instead of giving them an easy fix. It was also a pleasure to see how the characters from the two previous books in this series were doing.
