Write What You Know . . . or not.
“Write what you know.”
This often gets misinterpreted as “only write things you have personally experienced firsthand.” Which explains why we have so many books about murderers, vampires, and shapeshifters.
Obviously, we can’t experience everything we write about, and sometimes, that’s a good thing. Especially when it comes down to our characters engaging in, say, illicit drug use.
Neither Aleks nor I have ever partaken in snorting cocaine. We’re both willing to do a lot in the name of research, but strangely enough, we do have our limits. It’s the same reason I opted not to get tased for the sake of one of my other books, but to be fair, I do live with someone who has firsthand knowledge of what it feels like to be tased. (For the record, no, I’m not the one who tased him.)
But I digress.
Cocaine.
There’s a scene in Hostile Ground where Ridley makes Mahir snort some cocaine. So now we’re in the head of someone who just took his first hit of coke, plus he’s already amped up and nervous, so… how does he feel?
Naturally, we had no idea. But thanks to magic of the internet, as well as picking the brains of a few friends who have had the pleasure of cocainating (that’s a word, right? It is now), we were able to figure out how Mahir would likely feel, how long it would last, and just how much of a jerk Ridley was for making him do that. Seriously, that was kind of a messed up thing to do, man.
Ridley: “I had my reasons.”
L.A.: “You were being a jerk.”
Ridley: *quiet laugh* “And you know why I did it, don’t you?”
L.A.: *gulp* “Doesn’t make you any less of a jerk.”
Ridley: “I’ll make it up to him. Well, as long as he doesn’t put his foot in his mouth while he’s high.”
Mahir: “Crap…”
So yeah. Ridley was kind of a butthead for doing that, and I suppose we kind of were too, since we let him put Mahir through that.
Sorry, Mahir…

About the Author: L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer currently living in the glamorous and ultra-futuristic metropolis of Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband, two cats, and a disembodied penguin brain that communicates with her telepathically. In addition to writing smut and disturbing the locals, L.A. is said to be working with the US government to perfect a genetic modification that will allow humans to survive indefinitely on Corn Pops and beef jerky. This is all a cover, though, as her primary leisure activity is hunting down her arch nemesis, erotica author Lauren Gallagher, who is also said to be lurking somewhere in Omaha.
L. A.’s backlist is available on her website, and updates (as well as random thoughts and the odd snarky comment) can be found on her blog or on Twitter (@GallagherWitt).
Hostile Ground Blurb: Enemy territory is a dangerous place to fall in love.
After the deaths of three undercover cops investigating a drug ring in a seedy strip club in Seattle, Detective Mahir Hussain has been sent to finish the job. He joins the club’s security team in the hopes of finding enough evidence to bust the operation before the men in charge find a reason to put him in a shallow grave.
To protect the strippers, only gay men can work the club. Ridley, the cold and intimidating head of security, knows exactly how to test potential new hires—including Mahir. From the minute they meet, Mahir and Ridley engage in a dangerous dance of sex and mind games. Mahir needs to find his evidence before Ridley figures out he’s a cop—and before they both grow too close to betray one another.
As the game goes on, Mahir burrows deeper into the operation, where he learns there’s much more happening than meets the eye . . . and why every cop who made it this far has been silenced with a bullet.
Hostile Ground is available May 12th from Riptide Publishing.

Brilliant book and thank you for doing the tour and giveaways.
I enjoy both these authors individual works, but I have recently read one of their co- authored books ‘quid pro quo’ – sizzling hot! It’s part of a series, a nice lot of books to read :-)
Sounds like such a good book. I’m looking forward to reading it.

I’ve always found ‘write what you know’ to be a fairly limiting statement. Thanks for the post and the chance to win!
I’m so excited about this one! I have it waiting for me after I get my real life stuff done!
Sounds like a fantastic read.
Halfway through Hostile Ground. Loving every minute of it. Always a thrill to read anything by these to authors.
This sounds fantastic. I loved the blurb. :D They seem to have great chemistry together!
I have a couple of their co-authored books in my TBR list, I need to get to them!
