Blurb: Every breath brings them closer to love, and a killer.
Jake Chivis is the descendant of Fire Elementals with a gift for psychometry, the ability to see memories from touching objects. After a bad breakup and trouble at work, Jake gave up his career as a detective in Detroit and moved to England to join a research program studying Elemental gifts at University College London. It seemed like the perfect way to escape his past and start over, and this time he’s vowed not to fall into the trap of dating a coworker. At least that’s the plan, until he meets Doctor Ilmarinen Gale.
Mari Gale is blond, sexy, relentlessly academic and comfortable in his own skin in a way Jake envies. After a handful of embarrassing encounters, Jake is ready to resign himself to staying under the radar, but when a colleague’s brother goes missing, he and Mari must work together to find him. As they dig into the inexplicable disappearance, Jake is impressed with Mari’s competence and unique skills, and even more impressed by his ability to wrap Jake around his finger. Together the unlikely pair discover murder, betrayal, secrets and just how high Mari can fan Jake’s flames.
Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of violence, strangulation and murder.
Review: Breathing Betrayal is a great start to a new series, Elemental Evidence, by Bellora Quinn and Sadie Rose Bermingham. As I haven’t read anything of theirs before, I have to say I was very satisfied with their storyline. I loved the idea of the new techniques used in solving a murder mystery, and the University College London where Elemental gifts can be studied.
Jake Chivis’s gift is psychometry; he can touch an object and see the past memories of that object. He doesn’t become the individual, but he can just see through their eyes. Jake was a former detective in America, and to avoid complications, he hid his sexuality. To please his ex, he tried to make some changes, but things just didn’t work out. Jake is basically just a regular guy, but he always felt out of place, like he was pretending.
Doctor Ilmarinen “Mari” Gale has a very special gift, in that he can have a conversation with the Internet. He can pretty much access anyone’s information by finding a simple, discarded folder and touching the monitor. He also takes some very dangerous chances with his gift. Mari’s also a very caring and loving son, and takes care of his mother, Annabel, who is ill. The relationship between him and his mother is endearing.
Besides their special gifts, Jake and Mari are avid runners. They have crossed paths while running in the mornings but haven’t really gotten to know each other, each having their own personal reasons why it may not be beneficial for them to meet. On one particular morning, Mari makes the first move and starts flirting with Jake. With Jake still struggling with his sexuality and Mari being open, they do have some misunderstandings. When they are teamed up to help Professor Weston find his missing brother, they start the process of becoming familiar with each other and learning their family histories. As Mari and Jake become emotionally involved, Mari reveals to Jake that he has dyspareunia. Jake comes through for Mari, though, and takes the time to explain how things can still be good between them. Jake finds himself wanting to protect Mari, but Mari is just full of surprises.
Breathing Betrayal is a well written story and a definite page turner. It has action, tense moments, and the MCs find themselves having to convince an unbelieving police force what their gifts can do. I have to mention the name Ilmarinen; I found it to be enchanting and creative, and it fit so well with Mari’s character.
With what develops at the end of this story, and not a solid HEA, I am definitely looking forward to the sequel. Jake and Mari are good together, and their gifts are unique and add to the dynamics of their characters. I am really looking forward to finding out how Mari and Jake’s relationship will progress and what other mysteries they will be solving using their talents.
