Blurb: Thanks to an abusive father and a string of bad relationships, Riley McCage learned the hard way that people are not kind without a reason. Now, after landing a job at popular gay bar Pot O Gold, Riley is on the right track—until the night Boxer finds him drunk and drugged in the back room of an exclusive sex party.
Donald “Boxer” Boxwood wasn’t looking for anything beyond some casual kink until he peeled Riley off the floor and gave him a safe place to stay. But there’s something compelling about the guy crashing on his couch, and the two forge an instant friendship that eases into unmistakable attraction. Despite Riley’s hesitancy, Boxer knows one thing to be true: he needs Riley in his life.
Riley risked everything to run away and build a new life for himself, and his secrets aren’t something he’d ever wish upon his kind, gentle new friend. But when the past comes to call, he’ll have no choice but to put his trust in Boxer…and believe people can change enough to deserve a second chance.
Review: At the age of eighteen, Theo Carey has an even greater traumatic experience with his father than the loss of his mother. He leaves home in fear, and changes his name to Riley McCage. He tries to become a different person, but his self-confidence is still a big issue for him, and he finds himself in a dangerous predicament with a detestable boyfriend.
Donald “Boxer” Boxwood has faced family issues of his own. His grandmother took care of him and his brother, and other children. He’s a muscled, tattooed guy who has a soft heart and is loyal and helpful to his friends. He’s also trying not to fall into a relationship.
Boxer is at a party where he notices Riley, and he picks up on something that doesn’t seem right. He rescues Riley from a scene that could have turned out to be devastating. Riley always seems to live in a world of chaos. Every time there’s a crisis, his self-confidence is chipped away. Because Riley has a secret, his fear prevents him from going to the police. Boxer always seems to be there for Riley and, little by little, Riley becomes more comfortable with him. But when Boxer leaves Riley to be with a friend, it’s sort of a double edge sword. Riley starts doubting himself again, though in a way, it also makes him stronger.
A.M. Arthur not only brings us a heartwarming, complex story, but she gives us many serious issues to think about. She uses superb skill in addressing the danger of drug and alcohol abuse, rape and animal abuse—for some, these issues may be hard to read about. I also liked the group of friends: James, Nathan, Elliott, Tori and Allen, who are always around to help each other deal with issues and just talk things out. Finding Their Way is an excellent addition to the Restoration Series.
