Blurb: When Intergalactic Navy Captain Nathaniel Hawkins goes undercover to investigate the theft of an IN weapons stash, the mission raises painful memories from his past. Using a title he fled nearly two decades earlier, Nate once again becomes the earl of Deverell, heir to the duke of Hawthorne, in order to navigate the ins and outs of a Regency world. But planet Regelence – where young lords are supposed to remain pure until marriage – has a few surprises for Nate, not the least of which is his attraction to Prince Aiden.
A talented artist, Prince Aiden Townsend isn’t interested in politics and the machinations of society gentlemen, and he adamantly rejects the idea of marriage and a consort. Aiden wants the freedom to pursue his art and determine his own future. But the arrival of the dashing and mysterious Deverell awakens feelings of passion and longing the young prince can’t deny.
As Nate uncovers a conspiracy reaching far beyond the stolen weapons, his future is irrevocably altered by the temptations of a life he never thought he could have. Drawn into the web of intrigue, Aiden is in danger of losing his life…and his heart.
Review: Captain Nathaniel Hawkins is a commander in the Intergalactic Navy. He has no intention of ever leaving the service and is raising his son, Trouble, on his starship. When a plot to steal naval weapons from a nearby planet takes him away from his ship, it lands Nate in a royal household where the weapons have been stolen from.
Prince Aiden Townsend wants nothing of courtly life. He does not want an arranged marriage with a man not of his choosing, and he does not want to entertain all the eligible men on the planet as possible consorts. All he wants to do is draw and paint. At least, until he sees the dashing Captain Hawkins in his father’s study.
This is a good story made even better by a top-notch narration. The story moves quickly and is driven by a well-developed plot. Joseph Morton gives full voice to a fairly large number of characters, each of them is distinct and well played. Where other narrators would give in to the crutch of accents, Morton uses only his talent to introduce us to the characters in this book. Through all of the plot twists and with all of the male voices being used, the listener can still tell the difference between all of them.
This is the first book in a series, and it lays the groundwork for future stories without boring the listener with too much exposition. The plot for the next book is set up without being contrived or going for a cheesy cliffhanger. Morton gives us humor, intrigue, and developing passion between Nate and Aiden without ever being boring.
Buy this book for the fun story and the great narration. Regency romance in space may not be for everyone, but if you give this book a chance, you will enjoy the ride and possibly look forward to book two.
