Blurb: For a lonely Cornish lifeboatman and an author who’s more used to crime scenes than love scenes, this Christmas is going to be very merry indeed!
When Jago Treherne agrees to man the Polneath lifeboats one snowy Christmas, he knows he can forget turkey and all the trimmings.
Yet when he boards a seemingly empty yacht and stumbles upon sexy Sam Coryton enjoying an energetic afternoon below decks, Jago soon realizes that he might be unwrapping a very different sort of Christmas gift this year!
Review: The Captain’s Cornish Christmas is another great addition to the Captivating Captains series of stories by this incredible writing duo. Sam and Jago grew up together in the small English seaside town of Polneath. Friends as boys and mates in their teen years, life took a diverging path for the both of them: Sam became a famous writer and celebrity while Jago became a rescue captain, devoting his life to those in need on the seas surrounding Polneath Harbor. As usual with this writing duo, the scene is set beautifully. You can smell the brine of the sea and feel the warmth of the pub and the people inside it. The ambiance of every scene is well-crafted and makes reading their books a treat for all your senses, only limited by individual imagination. It’s a modern-day tale which has a distinctly timeless quality to it.
Jago Treherne is determined that no one dies on his watch. He’s devoted his life to the citizens of Polneath and to the sea which surrounds her. He sees himself as no hero, just a man doing his job to the best of his ability. He has paid a high price for his devotion. Naturally shy and self-effacing, the sea has become his everything—the sea will never leave him. It’s a lonely existence, but it is familiar.
Sam Coryton uses the colorful people and picturesque images of his childhood home for his best-selling crime novels. He has wanted to approach Jago for years, but the timing has never seemed right. Finally, this Christmas Eve, events are conspiring in his favor and maybe, just maybe, he can get the shy man to go out with him. With the help of some of Polneath’s own, Sam makes a bold move and creates a Christmas to remember for his Captain.
This story encompasses two days, a snap shot out of the life of these two men, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Ugh, I wish it had been longer…so much promise, so much beautiful angst wrapped up in our salty sea captain. If this were a full-length novel, I would buy it in a heartbeat. This short, heartwarming story will not take you long to read, but the feels will stay with you long after you have read the last words.
“A white Christmas and you.” Sam beamed, his eyes sparkling as bright as the stars in the clear sky. “What more could I have wished for?”
If you are looking for a short heartwarming English Christmas novella, this story is for you. And then move on to the other books in the Captivating Captains series, you won’t regret it.
