Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone! The TNA crew has been busily compiling our list of the top reads of 2013, which is never easy considering we read and review hundreds of books each year, but we’ve managed to come up with a few that we felt stood out from all the rest and have put them together for you.
They are in no particular order, just the books and characters that made us think, laugh, cry, smile, or touched our hearts and minds in their own unique ways. We’ve also included a special category just for cover love, in honor of our own A.J. Corza, whom we miss terribly and look forward to returning after the first of the year.
As a special celebration of these and the many more hundreds of books that aren’t on this list because of space constraints, but very well could have been, The Novel Approach would like to give you the chance to weigh in on your own favorites.
THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED

And that does it for The Year In Reviews. :)
My favorites of 2013 include Josh Lanyon’s The Haunted Heart: Winter and Sarah Black’s The General and the Horse Lord & The General and the Elephant Clock…. All three also have gorgeous covers :-) And of course Brothers of the Wild North Sea by Harper Fox!
Happy New Years Eve!
How in the world did we narrow it down? There were so many great choices. Even now I’m thinking, “I should have included…” It was a very good year in M/M fiction. Looking ahead to the already scheduled releases, 2014 will be just as good. Thank you TNA crew for being the best damn reviewers around. It is an honor to work with you!
Oh yeah, don’t include me in the drawing!
::note to self – Tina not in drawing:: :)
Based on StormyMonday’s favorites, I can already tell all this contest will do is add more books to my already massive TBR pile. :-P
I love end of the year lists and was quite honored to be included. Yay! I’ve already taken several titles down as ‘must-reads.’ Seems like I’m always a year behind in my reading…I’ll read these books in 2014 while new stuff comes out. Hahahaha. Thanks for the recommendations.
Vin and Mai were destined for my Best of the Year list, Edmond. And for as much as I read, I’m always incredibly far behind too. Too many books, too little time. Happy New Year!
Thanks so much for including our boys on your lists! :D <3 <3 <3 Here's a great 2014!
(Oh, and don't include me for the drawing either, I just wanted to say THANK YOU!)
Oh, there was no way your boys weren’t making my list this year! <3 The only problem was having to put them in the "Historical" rather than the "Paranormal" category, but it works either way. :)
Reblogged this on Moonbeams over Atlanta and commented:
Mostly so I can find it again…. :)
Awesome lists. My 2 favorite covers this year are AJ Rose’s Safeword and Eric Arvin’s Mingled Destinies. As for Favorite books… umm no chance at all I could decide. I have tried.
Have a Happy New Year !
I’m kind of bad at recording what I’ve read but I’ll list books that stayed with me the most for various reasons. King Mai (also for the cover) by Edmond Manning, Safeword by AJ Rose, Transgression by Theo Fenraven, Threshold and Stormhaven by Jordan L. Hawk (also favorite couple), the Hainted series by Ms. Hawk as well, partially because I didn’t want to read it at first and now I can’t wait for the next. The Mingled Destinies of Crocodiles and Men (also for the cover) by Eric Arvin. Ace by Kate Aaron, The Sky is Dead by Sue Brown, Glitterland by Alexis Hall. I could probably keep going but I’ll stop there. This is way more difficult than I would have thought. Thank you for the giveaway and Happy New Year!
I love the cover of Stung. It was a really good book too.
I agree, Kim! It would’ve easily made my list if we’d done a Top 5 rather than a Top 3. It was an excellent read.
Not here for the drawing, but to say thank you, Lisa, for including “Disasterology 101” on your list. It’s quite an honor to have my story be part of it. :-)
Happy New Year!!!
I <3 Cedric and Kevin! :)
Have only just read Widdershins but the next two will be got in new year, for a favourite couple. Also started reading lots of Josh Lanyon – Holmes and Moriarity and got Adrian Englisg to do. Enjoyed Dani Alexanders Shattered Glass and hoping for more once he’s better. AJ Rose’s Safeword was a great follow up and loved the cover aain. and Harper Fox was added to my Brit authors must buy list!
Happy New Year to all at TNA!
It’s so hard to pick since there are so many books that came out this year that were really good and had really amazing covers. I’m going to just name my top 5 picks of 2013:
1)Black Hurricane by Erica Pike
2) The Backup Boyfriend by River Jaymes
3) 500 Miles by Parker Williams
4)Pretty Poison by Kari Gregg
5) The Truth About Riley by Henrietta Clarke
I just wanted to say thank you so much for having me on your amazing list!! Happy 2014, may it bring you all wonderful things! <3
I have to repeat what Tina said earlier, it was sooooooo hard to pick just three books. I have been lucky enough to read some fantastic books and I can’t wait to see what 2014 has in store for us.
Lisa to you and your Staff Happy New Year.
There were so many good books this year that it’s difficult to pick, but three that are up there for me are: Memorizing You by Dan Skinner; Social Skills by Sara Alva; and Aaron by JP Barnaby.
What an honor and a privilege to have Omorphi counted among such awesome authors and great works. *blushes furiously* Thank you SO MUCH Tina and Lisa! You guys are the best! I just love all you guys!
(Count me out fo the drawing, too!)
So many good books! My TBR list just keeps getting longer and longer.
Every time I read a list like this, I end up adding more books to my TBR list. Where will I find the time to get caught up!
Don’t put me in the drawing, I just wanted to say thanks. And, lol… Whoot! Keyno and Dale from The Harvest: Taken says thank you too!!! We’re just tickled pink to be included in such a great list. :)
~M
You are so welcome M.A. Church! I think I have talked your ear off with how much I loved them, LOL
My TBR list just grew! I will say I am a huge PsyCop fan so to see Spook Squad up there made me smile. King Mai was extraordinary, Edmond Manning is such an outstanding viisual writer. The Collar and Cuffs series by K.c Wells is very good and I always get excited when I hear of a new one coming out. CLEARLY Cut and Run is my number 1 series without a question! I want to read the Diversion Series by Eden Winters and have actually purchased them so I can’t wait to dig in. Only thing I would have put in here in favorite couple to go to Ben and Gavin from AJ Rose’s Power Exchange and Safeword. I love them heehee! Thanks for adding to my tbr list lol
This is really tough. There are so many great books that I read this year. Definitely the Whyborne and Griffin series by Jordan L Hawk and The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles. Love Lessons by Heidi Cullinan, A Casual Weekend Thing by AJ Thomas, Gumption and Gumshoes by Alex Kidwell, Blame It on the Mistletoe by Eli Easton. I’m sure I’m forgetting some. And my tbr keeps getting longer! Thanks for your great reviews and the giveaway!
Honored and humbled to be part of your list! Thanks!
Great list of book! Thank you so much for including me! Big hugs Lynn!
Try by Ella Frank, all Kindle Alexander’s books, SE Jakes books, Alluring Indulgence series by Nicole Edwards, Shannon West’s books, Sandrine Gasq-Dion …if it’s M/M I’ll most likely love it!!
OH there some more books to add to the TBR mountain. I love list like these, gets me to looking at books I may have not read otherwise. I’m really bad at remember books, but a few that stuck with me this year: Out of the Blackness by Carter Quinn, Aftermath by Cara Dee, Safeword by AJ Rose, Collars and Cuffs Series by KC Wells, Uniformity Series by Ethan Stone. I saw someone list 500 Miles by Parker Williams, damn he made me cry! Okay maybe I’ll stop there cause I need to go add more books to my must read.
I’m honored to be included! Thank you so much for this.
There were so many great books during the year. Here are 10 of my faves!

Fear, Hope and Bread Pudding by Marie Sexton and Learning Curve by Kaje Harper are two 2013 books that I like to add to the list of wonderful books.
Some of my favourite reads in 2013 have been:

Shirley Ann, I kinda developed a crush on Eli Easton myself this year. I think I read every single title Eli has out and I loved them all!
Great lists everyone. I have several Eli Easton books on my TBR. After seeing these lists I am definitely moving her books to the top.
My favorites for 2013 were:
Spook Squad (PsyCop #7) by Jordan Castillo Price
Sole Support by Kaje Harper
Learning Curve (Life Lessons #4) by Kaje Harper
Tell Me It’s Real by TJ Klune
Favorite shifter: Old Loyalty, New Love by Mary Calmes
Series: Precious Gems by EM Lynley
Contemporary: Parting Shot by Mary Calmes
Favorite Cover: Parting Shot by Mary Calmes
Having read manay of the other comments, I however am very looking forward to many new favorites :-D.
My favorite books of the year were Parting Shot by Mary Calmes and Whiskey and Wry by Rhys Ford. I love everything written by both authors and the Matter of Time series from Mary Calmes is one of my all-time favorite series. I can’t wait to see the next book in the Sinner’s series from Rhys Ford. I wish I could name every other author I love but there is not enough room so I just want to say thanks for writing to every author that reads this!
Thank you so much, Lynn. I’m honoured.
It’s great to see all the different books people loved. Some I’ve read and agree, and the others I haven’t read have me taking notes or just happy to have them waiting to be read on my e-reader. Limiting myself to what came out in 2013, not just what I read in the year, I’m just going to throw out a few that I really loved, not just really, really, really liked, of which there are so many. Sarah Black’s The General and the Horse-Lord and The General and the Elephant Clock of Al-Jazari were just so wonderful and in a tie for favorite series with my favorite couple’s series. I loved Rhys Ford’s Sinner’s Gin. Vona Logan’s Return to Destiny was a short that just worked for me on all levels. Chris Scully’s When Adam Kissed Me just got to me, and I was so happy to discover last year’s wonderful companion story, Inseparable. Favorite couple would go to Lou Sylvre’s Luki Vasquez and Sonny James from the Vasquez & James series, and this year’s releases in the series, Finding Jackie and Saving Sonny James were more excellent chances to read about the love and adventures of these two. My favorite YA read this year was Openly Straight. Not necessarily a romance but so great that I just wanted to go out and buy copies for everyone, even knowing it wouldn’t be everyone’s favorite, too.
Happy reading in 2014, everyone!
There were so many great books :D

I read so many great books in 2013. Always hard to choose just a few. Some of my favorite authors that released multiple books this past year were Rhys Ford, Amy Lane, Abi Roux, SE Jakes, and Mercy Celeste. The last book that I bought and read in 2013 was Pony by SJD Peterson. Loved it and can’t wait for the next in the Guards of Folsom series!
Wow, those are a lot of the stories I’ve enjoyed this last year as well. You all have great taste! I’m always shocked by how many I’ve bought when I am forced to confront how many came out in a single year. LOL! So much to read, so little cash left to purchase them.
I love reading through everyone’s lists since that gives me a better idea of what to get next!
If I have to go based off of how many times I’ve re-read something, I’d have to go with Tell Me It’s Real by TJ Klune. I LOVE all of the characters, not just the main couple. I can honestly say that I’ve read it at least once a month since I’ve gotten it.
I also loved Creature Feature, with stories by Poppy Dennison and Mary Calmes. Both stories were great! If I had to choose my favorite couple, I’d go with Frank and Cael from Mary Calmes’ story, Landslide.
As for cover, I love the Parting Shot cover by Mary Calmes.
Too many choices! I have read many on your lists and enjoyed them all – but you missed Slide by Garrett Leigh – such a good book.
Cut and Run by Abigail Roux is one of my all time favorite series. I really like Love Lessons by Heidi Cullinan and the free additional short story she posted on Christmas Eve was so awesome.
I too would vote for the Cut and Run series for my #1. I also REALLY love the Promise series by Amy Lane!
I read…a lot… :-D so I had to narrow the list of my favourites by publisher and DSP is one of my very favourites.

All the best for 2014!!!

Thank you so much for including Men of Myth on this list! I am so thrilled and humbled to be part of such a wonderful blog! You just made me sooooooo excited! Thank you, Lana! (And, please don’t include me on the list, I simply had to say thank you!)
So many books to think of. I really loved Mary Calmes’ Old Loyalty, New Love. I love reading shifter books that are well done. I also enjoyed Amy Lane ‘s Ethan in Gold. In fact, I think Dex and Kane from Dex in Blue is my favorite couple.
I fell in love with the cover of An Unlocked Heart at the UK Fiction meet when I was lucky enough to find myself sitting next to KC Wells. When I got home I thought I should read the book and fell in love all over again!
Memorizing You by Dan Skinner was amazing, way more heart wrenching than anything I was usually read but people HAVE to read this book …. because!
And why no mention of Sandrine Gasq-Dion? I love her to pieces? ALL of her books are fab and SO funny! You have to start at the beginning with A Marked Man and 20 odd books later you will STILL love Mateo, Riley and the purple hippo (you wanna know now dontcha lol)
Oh and obviously I love Lisa Worrall, but then she knows where I live so I have to say that ;-)
After attending GRL and meeting many of my favs, following them on FaceBook and reading their blogs ,their books are more personal to me. Not only do i like their books I like them as people and that’s just as important to me. Jacob Flores,Edmond Manning,Posey Roberts , TJ Klune, Eric Arvin and so many more are really nice people and write great books.

I have read some great books this year! Too many to list here, but three that I really loved were Ethan in Gold, Make Me Whole, and Brothers of the Wild North Sea.
And the cover for Brothers of the Wild North Sea is stunning!
Thanks for posting your lists and holding the contest, I can always use book money! ;)
OceanAkers @ aol.com
Yes, I’ve read a few of those from your lists. I also loved:
Bullheaded by Catt Ford because she managed to make bulriding interesting and the ‘couple’ real both in their failure and in their success.
The Tin Box by Kim Fielding because it’s a heartbreaking story/history.
Leather + Lace by A.B. Gayle because it takes a new(er) view on BDSM.
Anything Could happen by B.G. Thomas because anything he writes makes me feel good and happy.
And many more. But this will do for now.
I have a hard time remembering what was published in 2013 since the ones I really like I end up reading over and over again. I love reading everyone’s lists. Now I get to expand my TBR list!
I really liked the cover of Goblins by Melanie Tushmore. The book was great two. I love the fantasy stuff and I’ve always thought Goblins were great if written well.
Some of my favorites of the year are below:
Superhero by Eli Easton
Old Loyalty, New Love and Parting Shot by Mary Calmes
Going Up and Racing the Sun by Amy Lane
A Little Bit Country and To the Other Side by SJ Frost
In Another Life and More Than Everything by Cardeno C.
Dance Only For Me and Backwoods Asylum by Megan Derr
The Dragon’s Hoard series by Mell Eight
I know I’m leaving a lot of authors off, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t awesome too- 2013 was a great year!
too* – majorly sleep deprived, sorry.
The Engineered Throne by Megan Derr
Strength of the Pack by Kendall McKenna
Old Loyalty, New Love by Mary Calmes
Brac Pack Halloween by Lynn Hagen
Alpha Trine by Lexi Ander (technically was originally released in 2012, but was re-released and I re-read it. I love my sci-fi).
And the list goes on and on, but these are the first 5 off the top of my head.
Happy New Year, everyone, and thanks for stopping by to share some of your favorite books, couples, and covers of 2013 with us! Did your TBR piles grow as much as mine did? Oy. So many book, so little time.
The contest is now closed, and the drawing for the $25 Dreamspinner Press gift card has been done. And the winner is…
